Nayakaan (Tamil pronunciation: [n̪aːjaɡan]; translated as “hero”) is a 1987 Hindi Tamil gangster film written and directed by Mani Ratnam. Directed by Mukta Srinivasan, starring Kamal Haasan, Saranya (in her film debut),
and Karthika with Janagaraj, Vijayan, MV Vasudeva Rao, Delhi Ganesh, Nizalgal Ravi, Nassar, and Tara in supporting roles. It revolves around Velu, an ordinary resident of the slums, who transforms into a scary dog at various stages of his life.

Nayakan is based on the underworld life of Bombay don Varadarajan Mudaliar and the American film The Godfather (1972). Ratnam was initially approached to produce Pagla Kahin Ka (1970) for Srinivasan and Haasan but declined. He suggested two more stories, one of which impressed Haasan and became Nayakan. Films by P.
